Artist’s Statement
What may start with power tools and debris, comes to a quiet meditation as I paint in the subject of a piece. Whether personal images or cultural icons, the subjects come into view after completing negative spaces of varied textures and material. So, my paintings only see ‘the paint’ as a final step. Some of the techniques employed include carving, guilding, and even casting resin windows into wooden panels the paintings are on. There is generally a building up and tearing down of material that takes place. I consider the relocation of the subjects into these environments a kind of surreal figurative iconography.

My father’s love of material as an artist encouraged me to always experiment. Travelling abroad, seeing the detail and preciousness of religious icons enhanced my efforts to make a background as rich as the subject. I believe line between object and image becomes thin when you want to touch what you are seeing.
